TICAH Interactive Community Calendar is distributed

TICAH’s Healthy People, Healthy Homes, Healthy Communities project published its first teaching calendar.  Designed with photographs and artwork from the communities where we work, each month of the calendar has a theme, discussion group questions, and health tips.  The days of the months are marked with dates in contemporary Kenyan political, cultural, sports, arts, and community history.  To be used in TICAH’s community outreach programs, the calendar was first distributed to support group facilitators.  TICAH USA Board Chairman Sylver Quevedo was with us in Nairobi for one of these celebrations.

TICAH Meets the Press

TICAH held a sensitization meeting with members of Kenyan press to share the process we use in our Mwili Yangu, Chaguo Langu (“My Body, My Choice”) and to encourage them to provide informed coverage of TICAH’s February events aimed to stimulate attention to the sexual choices we make.

River Walk at National Museums of Kenya

Paved paths, part of TICAH’s River Walk at the National Museums of Kenya, continue to be built.  Sculptors and artists Jackson Wanjau, Anthony Wanjau, and David Mwaniki of Kuona Trust, begin carving art pieces from the three felled gum trees on the property.

Valentine's Day

TICAH marked this year's Valentine's Day with several community and media events related to our sexuality project, the issues it raises for young Kenyans.  These included an event in Kibera hosted with Carolina for Kibera, street theatre, song and dance, and the lively distribution of TICAH’s “My Body, My Choice” stickers through a question and answer exchange with community members.

Book Launch

TICAH launched our latest book, “We Are Talking About Sex/ Tunasungumza Kukusa Ngono,” a beautifully illustrated guide with fourteen modules and set of facilitation tools for use in peer-led support groups.  At the launch, Kactus Africa, a youth group from Korogocho, had their first public performance of the song/theatre piece entitled Mwili Yangu, Chaguo Langu (“My Body, My Choice”).

“Valuing Traditional Medicine” Fieldwork

Following from one year’s research on the policy and regulatory frameworks of traditional and herbal medicine in the context of diverse health systems and cultures, and a thorough assessment of existing data on health expenditure to see how and when herbal medicine is being used in African, Asian, and other households, TICAH’s multi-disciplinary fieldwork team began to work in urban (Viwandani) and rural (Siaya) Kenyan sites to refine research methodologies and begin our data collection. TICAH is partnering with ACE in Siaya to carry out these studies, the first of their kind.
