About the Illness

Meningitis is an infection causing inflammation of the thin layers of tissue that cover the brain and spinal chord. There are many types of meningitis, but the two most common types are caused by either bacterial or viral infections. Children are generally more susceptible to contracting meningitis, although it is also a common problem for people who are HIV+.

Common Symptoms

Severe, persistent headache; stiff neck; sensitivity to light; drowsiness and confusion.

Children’s Issues

Infants are likely to experience the following symptoms:
Fever; irritability (fussy & crying a lot); lethargy; high-pitched cry; arching back; crying when moved; a bulging fontanelle (soft spot on infant’s head); seizures.
Children over 1 year are likely to experience:
Fever; neck or back pain (stiff neck); headache; confusion; sensitivity to light; refusing to eat; decreased level of consciousness; seizures; nausea and vomiting.

Important Information

Seek medical treatment IMMEDIATELY if you suspect that you or your child is suffering from meningitis. It can kill you if you do not treat it straight away.

Food and Nutrition Advice

  • Foods rich in protein (preferably vegetable).
  • High energy foods.
  • Foods rich in potassium.
  • Foods rich in calcium.
  • Traditional green vegetables.
