WORLD CONTRACEPTION DAY 2016 – September 21, 2016 by Mercy Oongo

TICAH in collaboration with Bayer Kenya and WOSWA participated in the University of Nairobi Lower Kabete Campus Contraception Day. This was to mark the World Contraception Day which takes place on September 26th every year. The annual worldwide campaign centers on a vision where every pregnancy is wanted. Launched in 2007, WCD’s mission is to improve awareness of contraception and to enable young people to make informed choices on their Sexual and Reproductive Health.

Students came together to talk openly about contraception. We engaged in a talk in which we discussed the different types of contraception and how they are used. We also discussed the myths on contraception with the students as we tried to burst the myths and tell them the facts on usage of contraception. It was surprising that the students still held on to the myths but we managed to inform them about the factual aspects of contraception so that they have a guide to make choices when it comes to sexual and reproductive health and in this case about use of contraception.

We were glad that the students embraced the message and said that they were more informed and were now in a better place to make better choices on issues concerning their health and their lives in general. They got to understand the importance of taking responsibility for their own health and their own lives. It was a very educative and informative experience and we hope to be part of next year’s WCD in a big way.
